How Safe Are Your Pet's Toys and BowlsA few years back Anne and I purchased a couple of tennis balls for our dogs to fetch in the backyard. Within a couple of weeks both dogs were sick with the same symptoms. After nearly $250.00 in vet bills we discovered that they were having a reaction to the tennis balls we bought from one of the chain pet stores. Turns out that the tennis balls had toxic substances on them.High levels of lead, arsenic and chromium to name a few have been found in both cat and dog toys. Phthalates and Bisphenol A are chemicals which are used to give plastic more elasticity. These two chemicals mimic female hormones and act as anti-androgens. Anti-Androgens block male hormones. Your pet's saliva and chewing action releases the toxins into their blood system.Toys made in the US are, for the most part free from at least the BPA's. Toys made in China and some other foreign countries contain a shopping list of toxic substances. High levels of lead in particular are routinely found in toys manufactured in China.Remember those tennis balls? A study in 2009 discovered that 48% of tennis balls made specifically for the pet industry had detectable to high levels of lead, arsenic, chlorine and bromine. Studies in humans have linked these chemicals to learning disabilities, reproductive problems, liver toxicity and cancer.If you own a cat you might have purchased one of the many catnip toys sold in pet stores. What you need to know is that many of the catnip toys from overseas factories have tested positive for high levels of chromium. Chromium is a known carcinogen.When you are walking through a pet store it is very tempting to buy your pooch or kitty one of those bowls with the cute little paws and sayings on them.
